Where does Painting Inspiration Come From

Like almost every other artist inspiration for paintings comes to me from many different sources. Nature is my greatest inspiration. The color combinations that nature does is so beautiful. Here is a photo I took at the NJ Botanical Gardens.

I love varigated plants. It’s hard to deny their beauty. I find plants symmetry so eye pleasing.

Since beginning painting I find that there are many times I’ll see something in real time and think what a beautiful painting that would be. There have been times I have my camera with me and have taken a picture to paint later. Like this one of my rescue cat Major Tom and one of my other rescue cat Kip.

Light and dark play a major role in my choosing subjects for my paintings. First the subject matter has to speak to me. Then it needs to have some lighting that I find beautiful.

I discovered when the lighting is perfect it makes it easier for me to create the painting and it is so enjoyable.

Even when I paint female portraits I love subjects that the lighting hits them just so. It makes the painting feel more real even though I like my paintings to lean more towards the abstract, not photo realistic.

One thing that I try to do is take days where I bring my camera out. I love photography also but this is more a hobby. During my outtings I see if I find compositions for paintings I would enjoy painting. There are many photos I take that will never become a painting but if I get just one that’s a win for me.

My advice if you are feeling stuck creative is to just be open to inspiration and it will come. It will come in unexpected moments, at times you least expect like when you are having your morning cup of tea. Just being open is enough.

Happy creating & Thanks for reading❤️
