Artistic Exploration without Expectations

*I’ve moved my blog, this post was originally published on October of 2024

These past couple of weeks I have been spending my time experimenting with my painting. I’ve been experimenting with my color palette, with my mark making, and with my subjects.

Whenever I have read about creating a successful art business the one criteria is to have a “niche”. Do you paint tiny fruit? Do you only paint portraits? Do you only use vibrant colors? I understand how this makes for a good business model but I find it stifling as a creative. I always enjoy exploring, testing new ideas.

Some of my side creative projects I do or have done are wood burning, collage, knitting, sewing, textile art and much more. I always feel like I need to follow my creative inclinations.

There are certain subjects I gravitate towards when painting like birds or female portraits that capture an emotion that moves me, or currently my rescue cat Mr. Tom Spots has been my muse.

Perhaps there will come a day when I will settle on something and only want to explore that. But for right now I will explore these inclinations and maybe this will hinder me having a successful art business but I feel my creative soul expression is more important.

Thanks for reading& happy creating!

❤️Jessica
